As an esthetician who has been treating dry and dehydrated skin in a clinical setting for more than 30 years, I want to give you a clear, honest picture of what hyaluronic acid does, how serums and moisturizers use it differently, and how to layer them for results that actually hold.
What Hyaluronic Acid Does for Your Skin
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring polysaccharide — a sugar molecule — found throughout the body, with the highest concentration in skin tissue. Its primary function is water retention: a single gram of hyaluronic acid can hold up to six grams of water. In the skin, HA sits within the extracellular matrix of the dermis, maintaining hydration, plumpness, and the supple texture associated with healthy skin function.
As we age, and with repeated UV exposure, HA levels in the skin decline. The result is not just dryness — it is a loss of the cushioning and volumizing effect that HA provides in the deeper layers. Surface dehydration is visible as tightness and flakiness. Deeper HA loss shows up as flattened skin texture and a settling of fine lines.
Topical hyaluronic acid cannot fully replace what is lost in the dermis. What it can do, used correctly, is draw water to the skin's surface, temporarily plump fine lines, and support the skin barrier's moisture-retention capacity.
Serum vs. Moisturizer — The Actual Difference
Hyaluronic Acid Serum
A hyaluronic acid serum is a water-based, low-viscosity formula. Its job is delivery: it gets HA into the upper layers of the skin efficiently, where the molecule draws moisture from the environment and the deeper skin layers toward the surface. Good HA serums use multiple molecular weights — larger HA molecules that sit on the skin's surface and create immediate plumping, alongside lower-molecular-weight fragments that penetrate more deeply into the stratum corneum.
What a serum does not do: seal. A water-based serum applied to dry skin in a low-humidity environment without anything on top of it will allow the moisture HA draws to evaporate. This is the scenario where people say "HA made my skin more dry." It is not the HA; it is the missing next step.
Hyaluronic Acid Moisturizer
A moisturizer that contains hyaluronic acid combines HA with emollients and occlusives — lipid-based ingredients that reinforce the skin barrier and reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL). The HA draws and binds water; the lipid components seal that moisture in. This is a fundamentally different job, and it cannot be done by a serum alone.
Think of it this way: the serum fills the reservoir, and the moisturizer puts the lid on it. Without the lid, the reservoir empties. Without the reservoir, the lid has nothing to work with.
The Correct Layering Order
- Step 1: Cleanse
- Step 2: Apply hyaluronic acid serum to slightly damp skin — a slightly damp surface gives the HA more water to bind immediately.
- Step 3: Allow the serum to absorb for 30–60 seconds.
- Step 4: Apply moisturizer while the serum is still slightly tacky. This seals the hydration before evaporation can occur.
- Step 5 (morning): Finish with SPF.
When to Use Each — and When to Use Both
For genuinely dry skin — a skin type characterized by insufficient lipid production — both a serum and a moisturizer are typically necessary. Dry skin cannot generate enough of its own barrier lipids to prevent moisture loss, so a moisturizer with barrier-reinforcing ingredients is not optional.
For dehydrated skin — a temporary condition of water deficiency that can affect any skin type, including oily — an HA serum makes an immediate difference, but still needs to be sealed with a moisturizer to hold the hydration in place.
